What to do about money?
How much to we need?
Starting costs will include:
- Space and infrastructure. At the moment, we are mostly looking for available office spaces that could be converted into a versatile learning environment. Refurbishing, furniture, and building the IT infrastructure will probably be the main cost drivers.
- Marketing and outreach. On the student side, word-of-mouth advertising of our preliminary work has already built up some demand. Leading up to the launch itself, we will have to rent booths at the major education fairs, advertise in secondary schools as well as alternative primary schools, and actively seek media exposure through various channels. On the staff side, we will have to recruit competent coaches and develop the first rounds of workshops with external experts. As a consequence, administrative operations will have to start well in advance before the school launch itself.
Running costs will include:
- Personnel costs for the coaches (3-5 at the beginning) and the administrators (1-2)
- Rent and associated costs (heating, electricity, Internet connection)
- Permanent infrastructure costs (e.g. tech support and maintenance)
- Fees for the external experts
- A dedicated side budget for buying new equipment as needed, administrated by the school commune
How do we get it?
Since we don't want to be restricted by the Austrian curriculum for public schools, we don't intend to seek official recognition by the Austrian Ministry of Education ("Öffentlichkeitsrecht"). As a result, we will have to raise all the funds we need ourselves.
Tuition fees for private schools in Austria typically range between €300 and €500 per month (with the notable exception of the Vienna International School, which charges more than €1,500/month). Thanks to our lean educational structure, we hope to be able to keep tuition fees down to less than €500/month. We are also actively looking for sponsorship by organizations interested in education reform and evidence-based secular schools. Since we want our school to serve as a test bed for innovative approaches, it would be preferable if we could keep tuition fees as low as possible, as well as offer scholarships to children from disadvantaged families, in order to minimize selection bias.
